Research and English Courses

RESEARCH COURSES:

Research and Writing
This non-credit twelve-week course deals with basic research. It includes the preparation and writing of a research report which can be submitted for another course.

NOTE: The Research and Writing course is required for all students and must be taken during the student's first year of study. Exemption will be given for the writing portion of the Research and Writing course to those students who can demonstrate their writing competency (previous master's thesis or published journal articles). No exemption will be given for the research component of the course, since it has to do with learning the skills of theological research.

Research Design
This course aims to help students analyze and synthesize research methodology for the planning and construction of a research proposal. It seeks to familiarize the students with the broad integration of research concepts and techniques required for graduate study, research, and scholarly writing. Prerequisite: Research Methods (to be taken off campus)

Research in Church and Ministry
This course is a training seminar that develops basic skills for the performance of both qualitative and quantitative research in local churches and other fields of Christian ministry. Practitioners involved in Christian ministry will guide students in the performance of research methodology skills in three areas: documentary/historical; experimental/field; and statistical. At the end of the course, students will possess the basic skills necessary for doing an actual research project that will benefit local church ministry work or other fields of Christian endeavor.

Thesis Writing
This six-unit course involves the writing and defense of a thesis under the guidance of a thesis director. Prerequisite: Research Design

ENGLISH COURSES:

Academic English
This course introduces the student to the strategies for reading academic texts, develops the student's writing skills for academic papers and offers opportunity for the student to increase his/her ability to interact in class discussion with confidence and articulation.

English for Theological Studies
This course deals with basic aspects of the English language including grammar, pronunciation, reading, writing, speaking, and listening. These skills are taught within the context of language tasks that students might encounter in their ministry or studies at ATS. (Note: this course is 3 units.)
