Academics 

New Course Offering at ATS:
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

    This course is designed for prospective teachers of English language learning and formatted in the style of a workshop. Topics will include needs analysis, classroom management, lesson planning, and teaching resources. Professional preparation will be addressed with a refresher course in grammar and basic phonology. Attention will be given to learning how to teach the 5 skills of English: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar, and how to create a student-centered classroom.

   Cultural adjustment and personal preparation will be addressed by guest speakers who will share real-life experiences in TESOL cross-cultural environmentsThe class is designed to be an interactive classroom which seeks to model the methods and dimensions of English language learning. Micro-teaching time is included in two class periods allowing students to practice planning a lesson, teaching the material, and receiving feedback. The course will provide not only the tools and resources for successful language teaching, but also the foundation for managing a classroom, interacting with students and adapting curriculum so that new teachers will feel prepared and confident in a cross-cultural teaching environment.
